Visitor Services Lead

Visitor Service Lead (VSL) will oversee the museum gift shop including daily functions, inventory control, and light social media marketing. This position will also provide a high level of customer service including selling tickets and memberships, and occasionally handling questions and monitoring guest compliance with museum rules and Covid protocols.  VSL will work closely with the Gift Shop Manager and Buyer, as well as the Volunteer Coordinator to maintain the brand and staffing of the gift shop. VSL will report to the Executive Director and may be supervised by the Operations Director. This is a seasonal position from April to November.

 Primary Responsibilities:

  • Track and control merchandise for the museum gift shop
  • Supervise daily operations of the gift shop
  • Oversee the cash register and daily receipts
  • Provide superior customer service to all guests
  • Assist with marketing via social media posts
  • Assist in the training of cashier operations by following policies and procedures
  • Relay accurate information about planned programs and events
  • Handle customer service issues/questions in a professional, polite, and positive manner
  • Ensure that the museum’s rules and safety protocols are followed
  • Carry out light housekeeping/cleaning duties as outlined for each area throughout the day

 Requirements:

  • 1-3 years’ experience in a retail environment
  • Interface effectively with visitors in both conveying information and listening to their questions/complaints
  • Must be able to walk several flights of stairs and lift 40 lbs.
  • Be well organized and thorough with close attention to detail and follow-through
  • Work as a team player with staff, volunteers, and Board members with courtesy and respect
  • Able to work a flexible schedule to include selected weekends, holidays and the rare special events.

 Helpful experience:

  • 2+ years managerial experience in a retail position
  • Experience in another museum or related institution

 Application:

  • Hourly pay $17/hour.

Visitor Services Associate

Visitor Service Associates (VSAs) must provide a high level of customer service and satisfaction to ensure an excellent experience for all visitors and are responsible for a broad range of activities including selling tickets and memberships, assisting with special programs and events, overseeing access control, engaging with guests in the exhibition spaces, handling questions, and monitoring guest compliance with museum rules and Covid protocols. VSAs report to the Executive Director and may be supervised by the Operations Director, or the onsite manager for the day.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide superior customer service to all guests
  • Project a positive image, serving as an ambassador for the museum
  • Maintain proper cashier operations by following policies and procedures
  • Relay accurate information about planned programs and events
  • Handle customer service issues/questions in a professional, polite, and positive manner
  • Actively participate in all provided training classes; properly implement newly learned skills
  • Ensure that the museum’s rules and safety protocols are followed
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures
  • Carry out light housekeeping/cleaning duties as outlined for each area throughout the day
  • Assist with implementation of programs and events

Requirements:

  • Interest in Bar Harbor history
  • Interface effectively with visitors in both conveying information and listening to their questions/complaints
  • Be open to multiple points of view and avenues for problem solving
  • Must be able to walk, stand, and interact with the public for long periods of time
  • Be well organized and thorough with close attention to detail and follow-through
  • Work as a team player with staff, volunteers, and Board members with courtesy and respect
  • Able to work a flexible schedule to include selected weekends, holidays, and special events

Helpful experience: 

  • 1-3 years of front-line customer service experience
  • Experience in another museum or related institution
  • College work in history, education, decorative arts, or other arts and humanities subjects
