Cristy Benson

From the time I could pick up a needle, I have always loved working with fibers. In 2005, I took up rug hooking as a way to channel my creative energy after my small boys were in bed. I loved translating the islands into wool loops.
During the isolation of the pandemic, I made about 650 masks. The fabrics inspired me to make a quilt to honor all those making masks in our community, donating a version to the Maine CDC where Doctor Shah hung it outside his office, marking a highlight of my fiberart career!
I shifted back to functional quilts when my mother (who has Alzheimer’s) asked me to make her a quilt. In a time when I could not visit and be with her, making that quilt was an incredible source of love and connection.
Through my quilts, I attempt to transition between colors in a way that follows rules but also defies obvious structure, with the hope of bringing joyful surprises to those who look closely.
