The Bar Harbor Historical Society is in a transformative period in its history. With the purchase of a historical Bar Harbor seaside estate, the pending sale of the previous museum location, and hiring new executive/program staff, BHHS is not only undergoing a transition to a new location, but also an organizational reinventing as a historical site and museum. There is an immediate financial challenge to pay down the debt from the La Rochelle purchase and establish a fund to maintain the building and grounds. With these immediate challenges also comes a unique opportunity to create foundational changes that will ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of the organization.

To address these dynamic challenges, BHHS is launching a four-year, $4.5 million Campaign for La Rochelle. The Campaign will serve as an invitation for more people to join us and as a catalyst to diversify and strengthen the partnerships and collaborations necessary to expand organizational capacity and ensure sustainability. Meeting the $4.5 million fundraising goal will enable the organization to secure and preserve a vital piece of Mount Desert Island (MDI) history, establish new exhibits and programs to ensure accessibility to the local and seasonal communities, and create a foundation for organizational growth.
